Effective System for Integrating the Euromap 78 Interface,
Supported by Multiple Safety Components

The company A. Raymond GmbH & Co. KG relies on an effective system for integrating the Euromap 78 interface, supported by multiple safety components. The general setup of the system includes an injection molding machine from Arburg, a feed system for bushings, a box buffer, a 6-axis robot on a linear axis, and an additional linear robot.

The Challenge: EUROMAP 78 Connection and the Safety Concept

The EUROMAP 78 defines the connection between an injection molding machine and an external safety device. It requires a two-channel safe signal (OSSD) according to the specified Performance Level, supplied by a safety switch or a safety controller.

With conventional systems, if additional safety gates are required, either extra interfaces must be requested from the manufacturer of the injection molding machine, or an external safety controller in a control cabinet handles the merging of multiple safety gates into a single EUROMAP 78 interface. The challenge lies in connecting multiple safety gates simultaneously to one EUROMAP 78 interface and ensuring that the emergency stop button on one gate can shut down other peripheral modules in the application, even though the connection only leads to the injection molding machine. In addition, the question arises as to how whole-body access protection or a pre-reset according to DIN EN ISO 20430:2020 can be integrated into the EUROMAP 78 interface.

The Solution: Safety Simplifier with Integrated Euromap 78 Interface

SSP offers a simple solution with the Safety Simplifier: safety functions can easily be connected via an M12 connector to a Safety Simplifier mounted directly on the safety gate. Up to 15 safety gates with the Safety Simplifier can be connected to one EUROMAP 78 interface. This is done via a fixed cable with a Harting connector directly to the injection molding machine. Safety functions such as emergency stop, gate request, or reset are implemented directly in the Safety Simplifier and can be configured without programming knowledge using the Simplifier Manager software. Ready-made function blocks and predefined programs facilitate quick and easy programming of the safety controller. The safe OSSD outputs are only released after all gates are closed, locked, and acknowledged.

Implementation of the Euromap 78 Interface at A. Raymond

SSP provided the following components: The Euromap 78 interface, which was connected directly to the injection molding machine via the integrated Harting plug, as well as several Safety Simplifiers. These are installed at the feed systems, the box buffer, the linear robot, and the Kuka 6-axis robot. The Safety Simplifier enables uncomplicated interlocking between the injection molding machine and the industrial robots that insert and remove the parts.

The system manufactures parts where bushings are overmolded – this is the main application of the entire system. The emergency stop interlocking via the Euromap interface was a central point, as it could easily be integrated into the existing safety concept. To secure access to the application up to PL e, the Safety Simplifier, the tGard safety interlocking switch, and the SAFIX 4 RFID sensor were combined. Safety Simplifiers are also used on the SCARA robot and pallet buffer for emergency stop interlocking. The safety enclosure consists of the Flex-Line aluminum safety fence system with a self-removal field for maintenance. At one system access point, the HOLDX RL 1 process guard locking was installed in combination with the Safety Simplifier for safe monitoring.

Thanks to the wireless safety controller Safety Simplifier with an integrated Euromap 78 interface, the injection molding machine could be effortlessly integrated into the safety circuit with minimal wiring effort. The Safety Simplifier offers a plug & play safety solution with an integrated Euromap 67, 73, or 78 interface, which significantly facilitates the integration and expansion of the safety concept. Communication takes place safely via wireless or CAN communication (PL e), which considerably reduces planning and wiring efforts. Sincere thanks to A. Raymond for the successful cooperation and trust in implementing a fully automated injection molding application. With the Safety Simplifier, SSP offers a simplified and reliable safety solution for industrial applications. For more information about our wireless system, click here:
